It is reprinted here with the permission of Arm.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>As L4 robotaxis shift from pilot to production, Arm offers the compute foundation needed to deliver end-to-end physical AI that scales across vehicle fleets.<\/h3>\n<p>After years of\u00a0autonomous driving\u00a0pilots and controlled trials,\u00a0the automotive industry is moving\u00a0toward\u00a0the\u00a0production-scale deployment\u00a0of\u00a0Level 4 (L4)\u00a0robotaxis.\u00a0This marks a\u00a0significant moment for\u00a0artificial intelligence (AI), as it\u00a0moves from\u00a0advising humans on recommended actions\u00a0to\u00a0enabling vehicles that perceive their environment,\u00a0although it comes with a steep increase in technical demands.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with\u00a0today\u2019s\u00a0advanced L2++ vehicles, L4 systems typically require broader sensor stack, such as LiDAR,\u00a0cameras\u00a0and radar, which drive data processing requirements\u00a0from\u00a0roughly 25GB\u00a0per hour to as much as 19TB per hour. This has\u00a0forced a fundamental rethink\u00a0of\u00a0compute for physical AI.<\/p>\n<p>To\u00a0that effect,\u00a0Lenovo\u00a0has\u00a0developed\u00a0L4 Autonomous Driving Domain Controller AD1, a production-ready\u00a0autonomous driving\u00a0computing platform\u00a0powered by dual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.arm.com\/news\/arm-neoverse-ae-nvidia-next-gen-automotive-technologies\">Arm-based NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor<\/a>\u00a0chips. WeRide is deploying the platform in its GXR Robotaxi, which is the world\u2019s first mass-produced L4 autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n<h2>Inside Lenovo AD1<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0Lenovo\u00a0AD1 serves as the central brain\u00a0inside the GXR Robotaxi,\u00a0managing\u00a0multiple functions\u00a0from\u00a0perception, prediction and trajectory planning,\u00a0to\u00a0real-time motion control\u00a0and safety monitoring.\u00a0\u00a0The platform is designed for production-grade L4 autonomy\u00a0for\u00a0robotaxis\u00a0and other\u00a0autonomous\u00a0vehicles.\u00a0Supporting\u00a0over\u00a02,000 TOPS of AI capacity,\u00a0it\u00a0enables\u00a0dense\u00a0perception, prediction, and planning models to run simultaneously\u00a0for faster, better decision-making on the roads.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.arm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-02-at-10.16.53.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For robotaxis, many loosely coupled electronic control units (ECUs) cannot deliver the latency, safety, or scalability L4 requires, so instead they need centralized, high-performance\u00a0compute\u00a0platforms.\u00a0Therefore,\u00a0AD1 is powered by NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor, a centralized car computer built on\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arm.com\/products\/silicon-ip-cpu\/neoverse\/neoverse-v3ae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arm Neoverse V3AE CPU<\/a>, which\u00a0brings previously separate driving, parking, cockpit, and monitoring functions into one compute domain.<\/p>\n<h2>Efficiency, safety, and foundation for physical AI<\/h2>\n<p>Arm serves as the foundational compute architecture of the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor platform, enabling advanced computing capabilities that power Lenovo\u2019s AD1 platform.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Performance per watt for fleet economics:\u00a0<\/strong>As robotaxis operate for extended hours in demanding dense urban environments, the Arm compute platform delivers server-class performance into a highly efficient power envelope, enabling large AI workloads without compromising vehicle battery or thermal design.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A safety-ready architecture:\u00a0<\/strong>The Arm ecosystem \u2013 including functional-safety-capable technologies, toolchains, software solutions, and long-established automotive partners \u2013 supports the platforms designed to meet ASIL-D and other global safety requirements, a critical factor for long-lived commercial deployments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A mature, scalable software ecosystem<\/strong>: Since Arm provides a unified architecture across cloud, edge and physical environments, it allows developers to build, optimize, and scale AI models using widely available software tools and frameworks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A roadmap aligned with future AI workloads:\u00a0<\/strong>As physical AI models continue to grow in size and complexity, compute efficiency and architectural stability become increasingly important.
